Miles travelled today = 5455
It’s hard to believe today has come. After months of planning, and looking forward to this trip, today is the day we fly home. We both agree this holiday for once has not really gone too quickly, and it actually seems an age ago we landed in Phoenix for the start of this 2200+ mile Road Trip.
A recap if for nothing else for us to remember for the future. We have done
- Starting in Phoenix on the 1st Sept
- Sedona
- Grand Canyon sunrise and sunset
- Short drive on Route 66
- Las Vegas
- Hoover Dam
- Death Valley
- Stanislaus Nation Park
- Yosemite National Park after driving around the Rim Fire
- San Francisco
- Alcatraz
- Golden Gate Bridge (in the fog)
- Pacific Coast Highway
- Monterey
- Santa Barbara
- Santa Monica
- Universal Studios Hollywood
- Hollywood Boulevard
- Rodeo Drive
- Venice beach and boardwalk
- …..and what feels like a million stop offs, view points, vistas and coffee shops,
We’ve driven over 2000 miles. Walked a good few too. Cycled a little along the beach.
We’ve won and then lost some money in Vegas.
We’ve experienced 122 heat in Death Valley. Seen the aftermath of a still burning Yosemite fire, the 3rd worst in California history (at the time of typing it was still burning). We have had to take a 175 mile detour to see Yosemite as a result of this fire.
Then there’s the visit to Alcatraz, the sights of San Francisco including sea lions sunbathing on the decks of Pier 39. The Golden Gate Bridge covered in fog.
We’ve had coffee on the PCH overlooking the ocean, and seen Elephant Seals relaxing on a beach at sunset.
The holiday culminated in LA, where we experienced golden sands, Green doctors on Venice boardwalk. Locals on the sidewalk showing their snakes and birds (not at the same time).
There must be loads I have not mentioned, but I could go on forever.
We headed to the airport at 3pm to drop our car off at the designated time, despite having a 7.40pm flight.
The time at the hotel was passed sitting in a bar, with a late lunch and a last drink before boarding and touching down in London to slightly cooler weather than we left behind in LA.

Jude, thanks for taking the time to look through my blog / USA trip. it is great to get such good comments. I have liked yours, and will be digging around it in the near future I am sure. Also, you have led me to some other photo challenges I may just have to take up!! Thanks again, have a great day!
You are very welcome – like you I love to read a good road-trip tale. You might like to read my Canyon trip on the site – that was an interesting journey – also in snow! Have you any plans for future road-trips anywhere?
