New Zealand Road Trip – Nelson and Abel Tasman
12th Jan. Day 12…..
KM’s today = 131.
KM’s this trip = 1,763.
After a frustrating Day 11, we were looking forward to a more relaxing day today, combining a gentle cruise, a 2k walk, and loads of sun.
Alas, we woke at 6.30 to find yet again the rain pouring down. We arrived at Kaiteriteri, at 8.50, donned our Kag’s, and jumped aboard the mini cruiser.
New Zealand Road Trip – Nelson and Abel Tasman
Shot up the coast in choppy sea’s, breakfast still where it should be at this point, seeing beaches, seals, and all types of things on the way.
We reached Tonga Bay after a couple of hours cruising, and jumped ashore for a picnic lunch, and to start our hike. The first part of the hike was almost vertical, climbing and climbing till we were in the clouds.
Views were breathtaking over neighbouring mountains and bays. At this point, the sun was shining and the only wet to worry about were the drips from the trees.

Reached Medlands Beach, the pickup point at 2.30, ready for the cruise back to Kaiteriteri. Hopped ashore, all food still where it should (just) and jumped in the car, hot, damp, dirty, but happy with a great day, considering 24 hours ago we didn’t even think we would make it.
Showered, did a bit of washing then into Nelson town centre for a spot of tea!!!
Went to a restaurant called Ford’s. Food was awesome, Suzanne had Scallops then Fillet Steak with Garlic Scampi, I had Duck Wraps then Pork Belly with walnut salad. mmmmmmmm.
Great food, great conversation, as we head into our final week in NZ. Driving to Punakaiki tomorrow, with Pancake Rocks and Blowholes to be investigated!!
