Sizzling bacon fills the air with sounds and smells. Eggs being expertly scrambled, and steaming tea to wash it all down with. Today will see us take a visit to West Bay.
Not just the perfect start to a campervan day but the perfect start to any day.
As the breakfast is being expertly cooked, the sun battles it’s way through the cloud giving us hope for the day ahead.
We are all ready to drop down the pop top and detach ourselves from the awning. Max chooses this time to have a meltdown as he wants to build his lego snowmobile.
45 minutes later and we back away from the awning. Max placated and snowmobile built.
The drive from Bagwell Farm to West Bay is probably as picturesque a drive we have ever done in the Campervan. The numerous pullouts on the way made it far too difficult not to stop. So we did.
The engine fights against gravity as it pulls us up the hills, then takes a breather as we dip down the other side. At one point the climb takes us into the clouds, and we become shrouded in mist. You can only imagine the view for miles on a clear day.
We arrive at West Bay
The descent into West Bay was a much easier one, and immediately we find a half-empty car park in a prime location near the beach.
3 hours in the meter, and we are all set. We spend the first 45 minutes in a play park. Max was in his element, having fun in the sand. The rolling West Bay cliffs were an impressive backdrop.
The sun-drenched stony beach is our next stop off. We wander past The Watch House Cafe, promising ourselves coffee there shortly. Our frivolities on the beach ultimately mean we go coffee-less.
Worth it though, as fun on the golden beach with a 4 old beats a caffeine fix any day of the week.
The pebbles / shingles climb high. They must be 15 feet at least. We trudge to the top, each full step taking us half back again as our feet get buried and slide back.
The sun creates a warming glow as it bounces off the sheer cliffs, almost making us forget about the wind chill.
There are plenty of people about. These cliffs were made famous by the BBC drama Broadchurch. Some no doubt ambling around to soak up the sun and the TV scenes.
The expiring car park ticket meant the sun was setting at our time on West Bay beach.
Heading back to Bagel Farm
60 minutes later we were back at Bagwell Farm, hooked up to the awning and the electricity. 60 minutes after that and we were back at the Victoria Inn for a hot dinner and a few drinks.
It was very much the same a couple of nights ago. Similar locals, similar vibe, and similar tasty food.
Max met his family friends from a couple of days ago and spent most of the evening playing with a couple of girls. One was a regular at the tourist park, the other lived at the pub.
During the day, I had introduced Max to Empire State of Mind, by Alecia Keyes. There was a recording done with Jay-Z, filmed and sung at a concert at Times Square. The version is not my favourite, but Max insisted on showing it to most of the people in the pub.
Max: “This was filmed in New York. Mummy and Daddy have been to New York, but I wasn’t there. I wasn’t even in Mummy’s tummy!!”
He has been there, but the way he explains such a simple thing to these people really hit home how much we love him, and how he is growing up way to fast!
We leave the pub, ready for bed but not before a trudge back through the muddy field, all three of singing Empire State of Mind, and ready for our beds, and our last night at Bagwell Farm.
